Traditional Jewish Women’s PrayerWe all know and love the siddur, our book of fixed prayers. This book was, by and large, created by men, for men. Did you know that Jewish women in Eastern Europe wrote their own sets of prayers? These informal prayers fell out of memory for many of us and are now being reclaimed. Often written in Yiddish, these prayers mark moments in the cyclical Jewish calendar, and mitzvot of particular significance for Jewish women throughout time. Together, we’ll learn more about the history of Tehines, read some together, and have a discussion about what it means to be a Jewish woman in a largely egalitarian society.
