SUMMARY:Theme Minyan Night - What to do about Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Temple Emunah’s Climate Change Working Group is the congregat
ion’s most recent undertaking to create a more environmentally sustainab
le community.\n\nUnder the leadership of Rabbi Lerner with the help of Mik
e Gildesgame and a small group\, we formed in early 2021. Our first job wa
s to find out how knowledgeable and concerned Emunah families are about cl
imate change\, what they are already doing to address the problem\, and wh
at kinds of actions they are eager to learn more about. Our survey receive
 d responses from more than 140 households.\n\nAmong those\, almost all (94
%) are at least a little concerned about climate change and the vast major
ity (85%) are “very” or “extremely” concerned. Most respondents (
73%) are already engaged in half a dozen or more actions to help reduce t
he emission of greenhouse gases\, and the interest in learning more is hig
h.\n\nWe will discuss these results at our theme night and look forward to
hearing peoples’ stories about their experiences. Also\, we will offer
programs about actions everyone can take\, individually and as part of the
synagogue’s own endeavors to be more environmentally responsible.\n\nWe
are eager to build our team! If this is an area of interest to you\, plea
se join us by contacting Mike Gildesgame.\n\nThis theme night is hosted b

SUMMARY:Theme Minyan Night - Electric Vehicles
DESCRIPTION:For years we told the same old joke:  "Why couldn't G-d make a
small turn during the Exodus and have the Israelites settle on some oil!"
Well\, now we know the real reason\, oil is terrible for the environmen
t - time to eliminate it from our diets! Electric vehicles (EVs) will be a
huge help in eliminating oil\,  so let’s talk about them.  Now\, ther
e are so many EVs out there to choose from in every price range:  Teslas\
 , Mustangs\, Audis\, Kias\, Leafs\, Bolts …. Do you have one?\nAre you t
hinking about getting one?  Come and share notes about your EVs and the j
oy and challenges of EV ownership at the Minyan Theme night hosted by Hal
Miller-Jacobs and Scott Miller on Tuesday\, October 26th\, following the 7
:30pm evening minyan.\nNote: The discussion will be only on Zoom. If you a
re attending minyan in person (which we encourage!)\, please join us from

SUMMARY:Jewish Resistance: They Fought Back (a New Take on the Holocaust) w
ith Guest Speakers Paula Apsell & Yael Beals
DESCRIPTION:Temple Emunah's Adult Education Committee invites you to learn
about this important aspect of Holocaust resistance from filmmaker Paula A
psell.\nDuring this informative evening\, Paula will show short clips of h
er two films: Holocaust Escape Tunnel\, which has already been released\,
and Resistance\, which is currently being produced. She will also share so
me personal stories. The evening will end with Q&amp\;A.\nClick here to re
gister and receive the Zoom link. \n\nAbout Holocaust Escape Tunnel:\nIn J
une 2016\, NOVA joined an international team of archeologists on an expedi
tion to locate the last traces of a vanished people: the Jews of Vilnius\,
the capital of Lithuania\, known in colloquial Yiddish as Vilna. In the p
rocess\, they made an extraordinary find — a hidden escape tunnel dug by
Jewish prisoners at the Ponar death pits. In a powerful film\, "Holocaust
Escape Tunnel\," NOVA reveals the dramatic discovery and shares incredibl
e stories from the descendants of this unique group of Holocaust survivors
. The documentary takes viewers on a scientific quest to unveil the secret
history of Vilna and shed light on a nearly forgotten chapter of the Holo
caust.\n\nAbout Resistance:\nFocused on the resistance of Jews to the Nazi
regime\, this 90-minute feature documentary with the working title Resist
ance\, along with a website and educational materials is designed to illum
inate an aspect of the conventional Holocaust story that may be known to s
cholars but not to most ordinary people. Our goal is nothing less than a c
orrective to the dominant narrative of the Holocaust\, one in which Jewish
victims went passively to their deaths "like sheep to the slaughter."\n&n

SUMMARY:Common Grounds - Building a Shared Community among religiously ob

DESCRIPTION:Temple Emunah Brotherhood Hosts Guest Speaker Ariel Livneh\n\nF
or decades\, one of Israel's most volatile and dangerous social rifts has
been the one between religiously observant and non-observant Jews. Given t
hat this divide is partly due to political differences\, in addition to di
fferences in religious practices\, the social danger becomes even more acu
te.\n\nAriel will discuss one of the initiatives aimed at addressing this
growing rift\, through the creation of a joint village community for both
observant and non-observant Jews\, in Israel’s southern region. We will
hear from Ariel about the experiences leading him and his wife to take par
t in the creation of this community\, its reality\, and the numerous chall
enges (some very unexpected) the community faced in its first days and tod
ay.\n\nAbout Ariel:\n· Ariel Livneh serves as head of an operational bra
nch in the Israeli Defense Forces (Lt. Colonel). He has been serving in co
re analytical\, operational\, educational and project management positions
in the IDF since 2001.\n\n· Motivated by the desire to address Israel's
growing social tensions between religious and non-religious groups\, Arie
l and his wife Daphna were among the founders of Eliav\, a joint secular-r
eligious village community in Israel's southern region. Eliav was founded
on the values of pluralism\, tolerance and shared community. Ariel promot
ed the establishment of joint educational institutions for children and wa
s an active member of Eliav's Education Committee.\n\n· Ariel holds a BA
in Political Science &amp\; Philosophy and an MA in Medieval Thought from
the Hebrew University's honors program at the Jack\, Joseph and Morton Ma
ndel School for Advanced Studies in the Humanities. His MA thesis focused
on Jewish-Christian polemics and dialogue in High-Medieval Europe. Ariel
is currently a Wexner fellow in Harvard’s Kennedy School\, studying tow

SUMMARY:LIJS: Rescuing Jewish Memory in Poland
DESCRIPTION:Before World War II\, there were 3.3 million Jews in Poland--te
n per cent of the population. By 1945\, ninety percent of Poland’s Jews
had been murdered. Few Jews are left in Poland today\, but the work of car
ing for the memory of their lives\, their culture\, and their stories is b
eing carried out by non-Jewish Poles. Leora Tec\, creator of The Neshoma P
roject\, describes them as "Rescuers of Memory."\nIn this three-week class
\, students will learn about the work of some of the Rescuers of Memory an
d how they are fighting the erasure of Jewish lives and stories through sc
 holarship\, teaching\, guiding\, museum work\, grassroots activism\, and t
he arts. We'll discuss what it means to rescue memory and how this “memo
ry work” fits into the "politics of memory" in Poland. We also will do a
deep dive into one cultural memory institution in Lublin\, Poland.\nClass
  will meet on Wednesday evenings:\nMarch 8\, 15 and 22 from 8:00-9:15 pm o
n Zoom\nTuition is $54 and please mail in the registration form. (Scholars
hips are available)\nCredit Card Payment and Online Registration is Availa
ble Here through Temple Isaiah\nPlease register by March 1 to give the ins
tructor time to be in touch with course participants.\n\n\n\nLeora Tec is
the founder of Bridge To Poland and Special Projects Partner to Brama Grod
zka-Teatr NN in Lublin\, Poland. She was a Wellesley College Stevens Trave
ling Fellow (2018-2019). In cooperation with Brama Grodzka-Teatr NN Leora
has created the online video archive\, The Neshoma Project: Conversations
with Poles Rescuing Jewish Memory. She has written numerous articles and s
its on several boards related to her work. She has a B.A. from Wellesley a
nd a J.D./LL.M. from Duke.\nLIJS (the Lexington Institute of Jewish Studie
